Vintage sterling collector's spoon made by Paye and Baker. The handle has an emblem with the inscription "Bear Ye One Anothers Burdens" and "GFS" [Girls' Friendly Society] within the oval final end. The bowl is plain and the spoon is in very good condition.
A pioneering youth organisation, the GFS was formed in 1875 for the preservation of chastity among working-class girls. At its peak, on the eve of World War One, it had nearly 200,000 members and claimed to be the largest girls' society of the day.
