 | | Vintage 1920's Native American Jewelry - Blanket Brooch With Whirling Log or Swastika
1920's Native American brooch in sterling silver with the whirling log or swastika symbol. This brooch was made for the tourist trade and looks like an Indian blanket. It measures 2 1/8" long by 3/4" wide and is in wonderful condition. The back is unmarked and the pin has an earlier C clasp. Native American jewelry of this era is getting hard to find and this is an exceptional example. In Navajo myth the swastika represents the legend of the whirling log. A tale of a man, cast out from his tribe, who rolls down river in a hollowed-out log. With the help of sacred deities he finds a place of friendship and abundance. In 1940, in response to Hitler's regime, the Navajo and other tribes signed a whirling log proclamation. It stated that "the emblem commonly known today as the swastika" would no longer appear on their crafts.

As the subject of this fine cameo, the "Three Graces" are the Greek mythological figures Agilia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), and Thalia (Good Cheer).
Meticulously hand carved in exquisite detail, this antique C1920's shell cameo is set in a sterling silver filigree frame. The cameo and frame measure 2 1/4" high by 1 1/2" wide. It's pin finding was replaced twice. It has a modern safety clasp in excellent working order, and the closure part of another still attached. These alterations did not harm the frame or cause any damage.
